A meme is a powerful tool, whether we involve magic in explaining it or not. As a simple unit of (funny) communication, it can get stuck in the subconscious. Then, if one encounters something that seems to support the reality the meme espouses, it gains credibility as something more than a meme; it becomes an argument. I see the popularity of Kek as having gained traction this way. In seeing the rise of Trump as something so unlikely, the idea of a chaos god influencing things became more believable. This is meme magic; the changing of people's views through memes. This effect doesn't need to invoke magic, it's been used for thousands of years in the form of propaganda. The power of it lies in human imagination, as evidenced by your assertion that Trump's popularity surely must come from otherworldy sources.
Why pretend magick has a role if a phenomenon doesn't require it in order to be explained?
