lots of people have set top boxes for streaming or playing local videos but smart tv's with that shit built in are probably going to kill off the tiny pc market

i havent played a vhs in over a decade im just an anachronist
pretty sure I still have a vcr plugged in too but I have no idea if it even works. in my case it's laziness, I'm far too lazy to disconnect it and either find a new place for it or throw it away

I can't give up my vcr with all the old 70's - 80's porn I have. It'll take too long hooking it up to a capture card and putting it all on my pc, so I'm kinda screwed.
eventually those tapes are gonna get fucked up

connect the vcr output to one of the inputs on a dvd-r deck. hit play on the vcr, hit record on the dvd, and you're good

I have a good video capture card, I just don't wanna take all the time of doing it myself.

I like the idea of a SteamBox, but the main problem I'm hearing is that it will be linux based.
What about all my games that I have on steam that won't run in a linux environment? I'm sure they are working on that, using their own version of WinE or something, but it just seems lacking?

You'll have to rebuy them for 3x the amount you paid for them.

Wine is shit, it doesn't run the majority of things you would want to run and the ones it does run much slower than they would natively. Chances are they'll handle this the same way they do with Steam on Mac, Valve games will be available for all platforms, if you buy a 3rd party game that has a Mac/Linux port you will get all 3 versions when you purchase it, and if a game is Windows only you're shit out of luck.
I would expect, however, that this will drive a lot more developers to release Linux ports of their games.

to be honest the only game I would want to play on my TV would be PixelJunk Monsters
