When we see real shapeshifting (not to be confussed with possession/ride alongs), we are actually seeing a fluctuation in the technology that they use. They often in video leave a trail, and you can see around their bodies - especially faces -- a shininess to it.

This reminded me of what happened in the movie Cathing Fire (Hunger Games) when Beetee explains the flaws in forcefield technology. That there always is a flaw....and you can see a forcefield in its place of weakness.

Also to note, the cloaking technology that they use goes as far as to cloak their actual voice from the alien tonal sounds that some of them make. So if something goes wrong with their device, you begin to hear weird sounds as well.

There are probably many reasons why their devices go through rather frequent problems....technology that good ETs are using to expose the bad ones possibly. No matter what it is, they are loosing their control over this technology they use to hide. It is becoming more and more obvious.
